Similar to the poetic vision of Tonalism in painting and Pictorialism in photography, Paul’s primary interest is in manipulating the harmonies of color, texture, and perspective in his images to evoke an emotional or ethereal response. In contrast to simply documenting nature, Tonalism "is an almost all-embracing alternative, extending to include both the symbolic and other-worldly nocturnes, and the more dissolved landscapes of the American impressionists." Similarly, the modern Pictorialist movement in photography is about taking an image "beyond the depiction of reality" for emotional and aesthetic purposes.
For a painterly or poetic effect, Paul's original photographs are often combined with colored texture layers in Photoshop post-processing. Other techniques include the use of tilt-shift and defocus lenses, icm (intentional camera movement) and simulated vintage or wet-plate frames. Absolutely no AI (artificial intelligence) is used to create these images.
